One of our trips was to the island of Corregidor .( I wrote about this trip earlier but somehow lost it ) We left our apt. early and drove to the CCP Bay Terminal inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex beside the Harbour Square where we boarded Sun Cruises Baycruiser 11 it can hold 285 passengers and travels at a speed of 22 knots. It took us aprox .one hour to get to Corregidor. Corregidor is an Island in the entrance of Manila Bay in the Philippines because of its strategic location in the bay, it served as a focal point for the naval defenses of the capital city Manila. Because of its rocky landscape and the fortifications of fort mills Corregidor island is also known as the rock. Corregidor is 6 kms long and about 2.4 kms at its widest point . its bulbous head , which points toward the South China sea rises prominently to a large flat area called the top side. This was the nerve center of the island during the WWII and here were located the headquarters, barracks, for enlisted personal, officers quarters, the traditional parade grounds, underground ordnance shops and the bulk of the batteries that constituted the military strength of Corregidor. a small plateau that interrupts the upward slope from bottomside to top side is the middleside and was the location of the barracks for the enlisted men, a hospital , quarters for non commissioned officers , a service club and 2 school houses. The bottomside is the lower part of the island and is the neck that connects the head and the tail of the island and East of it is where the Malinta Tunnel can be found. The Malinta Tunnel, which was the last stronghold of the joint Philippine and American Military forces, is now home to a Light & Sound presentation by national artist Lamberto V. Avellana of the events that took place on the Island during WWII. There were 23 batteries installed in Corregidor, consisting of 56 coastal guns and mortars. In addition, Corregidor had 13 anti-aircraft artillery batteries, 76 guns (28 3-inch and 48 50-caliber), and 10 60-inch Sperry searchlights. The longest range coastal pieces were the 2 12-inch (305 mm) guns of Batteries Hearn & Smith. When we toured the island all of the barracks and other buildings were totally destroyed providing evidence of the horrific Battle that took place there. Some of the guns that are made out of heavy metal were dented from gun fire and shrapnel. The American and Filipino army was eventually overwhelmed and was forced to surrender. After touring the island we went to the corregidor inn and had a nice lunch
